Stefán sækir innblástur í málverk Kjarvals af Vífilsfelli, Kvöldsól á Vífilsfelli, 1932 og Mosi við Vífilsfell, 1940. Annað þeirra var málað í grámóskulegu rigningarveðri þar sem nánast má finna angan af mosanum og hitt í geislaflóði rauðrar kvöldsólarinnar. Tenging Kjarvals við landið var sérstök og í þessu verki setur Stefán sig í spor hans við rætur Vífilsfells þar sem við sjáum ljósmynd af listamönnunum horfa yfir landið en í þrívíðu verkunum hefur listamaðurinn umbreytt landslaginu í áþreifanlegar höggmyndir úr bronsi, stáli, gúmmíi og gifsi. Þessi vísun í verk Kjarvals opnar fyrir nýja nálgun á verk hans og um leið samtal við listasöguna. Ást okkar til landsins birtist með nýstárlegum hætti í verkum samtímalistamanna sem leita sífellt nýrra leiða í túlkun sinni og viðleitni til að tengjast náttúrunni.
Stefán seeks inspiration in paintings of Vífilsfell hill: Evening Sunlight on Vífilsfell, 1932, and Moss at Vífilsfell, 1940, by Kjarval, the grand old man of Icelandic art. One was painted in overcast, rainy weather, and the scent of the moss can almost be smelt; the other in the warm rays of the evening sun. Kjarval had an extraordinary bond with the land, and in this work Stefán puts himself in Kjarval’s footsteps at the foot of the hill. We see a photograph of the artists surveying the land, while in the three-dimensional works the artist has transformed the landscape into tangible sculptures of bronze, steel, rubber and plaster. This allusion to Kjarval’s work opens up a new approach to his work, and also a way towards a dialogue with art history. Our love for our country is manifested in innovative ways in the work of contemporary artists, who constantly seek out new paths in their interpretation, and their quest for a bond with nature. RP
