Gljúfrasteinn - Laxness Museum
Gljúfrasteinn – Laxness Museum was the home of Nobel Prize for literature winner Halldór Laxness and his family for half a century.
Bought by the Icelandic state in 2002, on the occasion of the writer’s centenary, Gljúfrasteinn opened to the public as a writer´s museum two years later. At Gljúfrasteinn, Halldór Laxness’ home and workplace have been kept intact. Guests can enjoy the house and its excellent collection of Icelandic art works and design furniture as they take in the spirit of this incomparable writer.
Halldór Laxness was born in Reykjavík in 1902. His first novel was published in 1919, marking the beginning of a spectacular career as a novelist that would span decades. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. A true man of the world, Laxness spent a great deal of time overseas. However, from 1945 onward, his home was at Gljúfrasteinn in Mosfellssveit—the house which he shared with his wife, Auður Sveinsdóttir Laxness, and raised their two daughters.
